ALTERATIONSto thePRESENT EDITION
-
Edition 4.2.10
Moved the editor to
/editor, in keeping with the site’s other plain addresses; its earlier address,/admin, redirects there. -
Edition 4.2.9
Raised the width to which the editor resizes uploaded images from 900 to 1,300 pixels, so new images stay sharp on high-resolution screens.
-
Edition 4.2.8
Limited sign-in to the editor to three incorrect passcodes, after which sign-in pauses for 15 minutes for that connection; a correct sign-in resets the count. Removed 37 files the site no longer uses: the old illustrated initials and marginal drawings, a replaced frontispiece, and the images from the earlier homepage’s project cards.
-
Edition 4.2.7
Made pages build much faster. Each page had been reading every post from storage one after another, a dozen or more round trips before it could begin; it now reads a single summary of all the posts, kept current by the editor, so most pages wait for one trip instead of thirteen. Where several things must be read, they are now read at the same time.
-
Edition 4.2.6
Removed closing periods from the portrait credit, the epigraph’s source, subtitles in the Contents and on posts, “The whole Contents,” the category line, Advertisement, Notes, and Bibliography headings on posts, the edition lines in the changelog, the Commonplace heading and subtitle, and the not-found page. Changed the Contents part headings to read “Part the First: Essays.”
-
Edition 4.2.5
Removed closing periods from headings and labels where they read as unintentional: the plinth, the name on the title page, “To the Reader,” the Contents heading, the Register’s heading, key, years, book counts, entries, and dates, and the changelog’s heading. Switched every date to American style: “October 22, 2026” with the year and “Oct 22” without. Changed British spellings in the changelog to American ones.
-
Edition 4.2.4
Widened the framed images in posts so they overhang the text slightly on wide screens, halfway between the text and the header rules. On phones they still match the width of the text.
-
Edition 4.2.3
Gave the homepage the same header as every other page, with the name above the navigation. Changed the plinth beneath the portrait to read “The Author.” Reworded the title page’s imprint to “Published by the Author, and to be had upon the World-Wide Web, in the Year MMXXVI.”
-
Edition 4.2.2
Centered the portrait photograph on its oval frame, keeping the photographer’s composition.
-
Edition 4.2.1
Replaced the engraving in the frontispiece with the portrait photograph itself, keeping the oval frame, and positioned it so the face sits at the center of the oval. Moved posts back under the Contents, now without
.html(for example/contents/la-bas); every earlier address redirects to the new one. -
Edition 4.2.0
Opened the homepage as a book’s opening spread: on wide screens, an engraved frontispiece faces the title page, the two pages sharing one ruled edge with the fold marked by a pair of hairlines. The frontispiece is a line engraving made from the portrait photograph, set in an oval frame above a plinth bearing the name, within a plate mark. In the dark theme it becomes a white-line engraving, so its shading stays true. On narrow screens the two pages follow one another, frontispiece first.
-
Edition 4.1.1
Restored each book’s date read in the Register, as a quiet column of day and month beside the entry; the year is given by the heading above.
-
Edition 4.1.0
Gave every page a plain address matching its name: the Contents at
/contents, the Register at/register, the changelog at/changelog, Commonplace at/commonplace, and each post at the top level with no.html(for example/la-bas). Every earlier address redirects to its new one. Replaced the Preface and Works links in the navigation with a single link to the Cover. Moved the portrait back before the title page. Justified the Works and the changelog, and centered the Works on the page. Fixed Contents subtitles that were split in half rather than filling the line. In the Register, set the marks in red, listed each year’s books newest first, and separated author and title with a comma. Replaced the favicon with a red Goudy initial D, drawn in a simplified form at small sizes and in full at large ones, with icons for phones and tablets. Removed a stray outline around the editor when it first opens. -
Edition 4.0.0
Redesigned the site throughout in the manner of an early printed book, set in IM Fell English with ornaments from IM Fell Flowers 2 and initials in Goudy Initialen. Added a light and dark theme that follows the device setting by default. Built a new editor for posts, the Preface, the Works, and the Register. Added this public changelog, with the edition number shown in the footer.
-
Edition 3.1.5
Removed underline-via-border styling from inline links site-wide; removed the divider between the Notebook title and its first section.
-
Edition 3.1.4
Rebuilt the small “tight” divider as a hand-recreated festoon-and-bead ornament from a photographed book page, iterated on its proportions, then reverted back to the original pattern, same day.
-
Edition 3.1.3
Replaced the bespoke narrative-scene drop caps on all book reviews with a plain illustrated A–Z alphabet set, reserving custom artwork for essays and the homepage going forward.
-
Edition 3.1.2
Reordered Essays ahead of Reviews on both the homepage and Notebook page. Replaced the boxed book club selection banner with a quiet centered line flanked by fleuron marks.
-
Edition 3.1.1
Found and fixed the reason homepage changes weren’t appearing: a homepage template edited in a staging file that was never re-embedded into the live Worker script, plus a missing
Cache-Control: no-storeheader letting Cloudflare cache stale responses. Deleted the redundant staging file so the bug class can’t recur. Fixed every internal link pointing at/index.htmlinstead of/. -
Edition 3.1.0
Split the Notebook page and homepage into separate “Reviews” and “Essays” sections, with each note’s category shown in its byline.
-
Edition 3.0.3
Updated the favicon to new artwork matching the illuminated initials; further padding correction on the page border.
-
Edition 3.0.2
Replaced the colored pill badges on book dates with plain italic text, no background.
-
Edition 3.0.1
Added a thin inset secondary border inside the main one; adjusted page padding (more on the sides, less at the bottom); removed the border entirely on mobile, where it was constraining space.
-
Edition 3.0.0
Full color overhaul: a two-tier rubrication system (deep blue for titles and structural elements, gold for pilcrows and framing, brighter red for accents), a warmer parchment background, and a gold double-ruled border framing the entire page.
-
Edition 2.3.0
Replaced the font-rendered Goudy Initial drop caps with bespoke illustrated initials for the homepage and the essays.
-
Edition 2.2.0
Added the ability to link a Reading-log entry to its corresponding Notebook review, with the linked title shown in oxblood on the public Reading page.
-
Edition 2.1.0
Split the admin page into “About / Bio” and “Reading Log” tabs, and fixed field styling (password input, checkboxes, the “add book” row) that had been falling back to unstyled browser defaults.
-
Edition 2.0.0
Replaced GitHub Pages entirely. The homepage and Reading page became dynamically rendered by a Cloudflare Worker, reading from a new KV store. Built a password-protected
/admin.htmlso bio text and the reading log can be edited directly, without a code deploy. -
Edition 1.4.1
Tried a custom illustrated “D” monogram in the header, then the footer, then as a new favicon. Reverted all three placements back to the original text wordmark and Goudy Initial favicon, same day.
-
Edition 1.4.0
Added an automatic book count next to each year heading on the Reading page.
-
Edition 1.3.2
Tried a lozenge-pattern and then an ornament-pattern divider; reverted back to the fleuron pattern same day.
-
Edition 1.3.1
Added Letterboxd and email to the homepage social links, then redesigned the whole row as bordered pills instead of plain dot-separated text.
-
Edition 1.3.0
Added framed artwork plates above the body text on notes, with a double-ruled frame component.
-
Edition 1.2.1
Fixed footnote superscript numbers overflowing on narrow screens; fixed a layout gap under the drop cap on mobile.
-
Edition 1.2.0
Added
/reading/commonplace.htmldescribing the standalone Commonplace app, with a project card added to the homepage. -
Edition 1.1.3
Favicon corrections, Open Graph/Twitter card tags added across pages.
-
Edition 1.1.2
Site-wide pass converting straight quotes to curly, standardizing em-dashes (unspaced).
-
Edition 1.1.1
Replaced the meander-pattern divider with the fleuron (quatrefoil-dot) pattern.
-
Edition 1.1.0
Added the Reading log: books grouped by year, with ★ for favorites and a spiral mark for rereads.
-
Edition 1.0.0
The first complete version of the site: a homepage (About) and a Notebook. Established the core identity: parchment/oxblood palette, EB Garamond and Marcellus typography, Goudy Initial drop caps, a footnote system with hover tooltips and endnotes, and a meander-pattern divider. Self-hosted fonts throughout, mobile hamburger nav, hosted on GitHub Pages with Cloudflare as DNS/CDN only.
